Even viruses and malware designed for Linux usually try to use Windows code running on Linux systems. Therefore, there are not many viruses that can harm your Raspberry Pi. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist – you may still be in danger, and you should do what you can to protect yourself. As more and more users choose Linux systems, hackers have begun to develop malware and other security threats for this platform. ClamAV is a free antivirus program available in the Raspberry Pi OS repositories, so installation is easy:

  • Open a terminal or SSH connection
  • Update the package information with: sudo apt update
  • Install ClamAV: sudo apt install clamav

That’s it. There is no graphical user interface to manage all this, only command lines. However, it may be useful to create a task that runs a check at regular intervals or even at startup. Before I continue with the examples, I should point out that viruses and malware are not the only security problem with the Raspberry Pi. Or, better yet, you can create a new user and then delete the default Pi user. The mining malware mentioned above also targets these devices, as it is very easy to break into them and change the code. Sometimes the device can be used as an arcade game server, and if you do not take the necessary security measures, it is vulnerable to attacks.
