Fix: iPhone not backing up to iCloud

The iCloud is a natural part of the ecosystem for every iPhone user. It gives a much-needed sense of security by protecting your belongings, so you don’t have to worry, even if the worst happens.

But what happens when your iPhone stops backing up files, photos, notes, contacts, and everything else in the iCloud? We need to get started as soon as possible. You never know when you’ll need operational backup.

Check memory

One of the main reasons why the iPhone is not synchronized with iCloud is the lack of memory. You can’t put more people in iCloud if there’s just no room for them. If lack of disk space is really the cause of your problem, you will most likely receive the message Insufficient disk space.

If you actually received this message, you already know what to do. This is to free up storage space or to increase the capacity of the iCloud. If you don’t know how to do it, don’t worry. I’m right behind you.

Bonus: iCloudStorage Management

As I said before, if your iCloud account doesn’t have enough room for new backups, you have two options. You can buy additional storage space or free up existing storage space.

I know you’d rather not pay for the extension, but the first 5GB you get for free won’t let you go too far. In fact, I filled out the original 5GB plan with photos, just a few days after I received my iPhone and I enjoyed it to the fullest.

Apple offers monthly billing rates for data storage in iCloud. The bad news is that this is not a one-time purchase, which is not too expensive depending on where you live and the chosen monthly plan.

For example, if you live in the United States, you will receive $0.99/$2.99/$9.99 per month for 50 GB/200 GB/2 TB of additional disk space. If you live outside the United States, your price may vary. Visit Apple’s support page to find out how much iCloud storage costs in your country.

On the other hand, if you don’t want to pay for extra storage space, you’ll have to make the most of what you already have. This means that you will need to go to the iCloud Storage Manager section and delete some existing backups or disable additional synchronization for some applications that use too much storage space.

To manage your iCloud storage, go to Settings > tap your name > iCloud. Here you can choose which applications back up their data to iCloud and easily disable the backup for each application.

To view your existing backups, click Manage Storage. Just browse through the list of applications and hopefully you’ll find a backup that you don’t really need, but that takes up too much space. For example, at the time of writing this article, I noticed that backing up Lightroom takes up about 2 GB of disk space, which I had to deal with.

Photos are probably the largest consumer of memory, and if you remove them, a lot of space will certainly be freed up. But you probably don’t want to do that and leave your precious images unprotected. If this dilemma bothers you and you still don’t want to pay for extra storage space, I suggest you turn to Google Photos. In fact, many people prefer Google Photos over iCloud because the application and service is more convenient. And it’s free.

Make sure you are connected to WiFi.

While it may seem obvious, you’d be surprised if I told you how many times my iPhone has been disconnected from my home Wi-Fi network and switched to data Wi-Fi or my neighbour’s Wi-Fi. The same could happen to you.

So before you take more serious steps, make sure you are well connected to WiFi. It should also be noted that your phone only backs up files when connected to WiFi, it does nothing with mobile data. And that’s a good thing. Believe me, you won’t want to use mobile data for backups because you’ll lose it in minutes.

Switch off power save mode

I reasonably assume that the save mode is exactly the cause of your problem. So I’m sure you’ll solve your problem after low power mode.

If you don’t know what this feature is for, it puts your phone in a state where it uses less power to conserve battery power (hence the name). If the phone consumes less power, it may not be able to perform some of the more energy-intensive operations, which are backed up.

The low-power mode is normally activated when the percentage of battery charge is less than 20%. In this case, all you have to do is charge your phone. The energy saving mode is turned off and the backup process continues.

However, if you don’t want to wait until your phone is fully charged, you can also deactivate this feature manually. That’s how we do it:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Click on your name and go to iCloud
  3. Here is a list of applications that are compatible with iCloud backup. Scroll down and make sure the application you are looking for is enabled.

iCloud Service Status Check

Maybe you’re not the one with the problem. It is possible that you are unlucky today and that the Apple servers running iCloud are temporarily out of use. This really is something that can happen easily, believe me.

Just in case, go to the Apple website and check if the servers are connected to the network. Here you can check the status of your iCloud server and all other Apple services.

If the server really doesn’t work, don’t worry too much. There will probably not be much time left, as Apple probably has the best infrastructure in the world. Once the servers are back online, you can back up your iCloud account. Unless, of course, there are other problems.

Searching for updates

Updates for iOS is a real amusement park. Especially the roller coaster in the amusement park. At some point, you’ll be at the top of the world and take advantage of all the great opportunities Apple has to offer. But the next moment, the next time you perform an update, you are afraid of all the problems that a seemingly small update has caused.

Depending on when you read this article, iOS may spiral out of the current update, one of the issues being iCloud backup. To make sure this is the case, you should do some research to see if other people are complaining about the same problem in the same version of iOS you have on your phone.

If the problem was really caused by the update, there is probably not much you can do about it. We have to wait for the next update and hope everything will be okay.

Exit iCloud and then back

If none of the above solutions has solved the iCloud backup problem, we will eventually move on to the last option. And it resets all settings.   4. Confirm that you want to reset all settings.
