If you’re having network connection problems on your Windows desktop or laptop, and you’ve ruled out user error or a bad Wi-Fi connection, there’s a small chance that Microsoft is responsible. There is a bug affecting users who connect to proxy servers or VPNs that is serious enough that Microsoft is releasing an unscheduled update to fix the problem.

Devices that use a manually or automatically configured proxy server, especially those with a virtual private network (VPN), may display limited or no Internet connection status in the Network Connection Status Indicator (NCSI) area. This can happen when the VPN is connected or disconnected, or when the state changes between the two. Devices with this problem may also have problems accessing the Internet with applications that use WinHTTP or WinInet. Examples of applications that may be affected on devices in this state include Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Office 365, Outlook, Internet Explorer 11, and some versions of Microsoft Edge.

Since Windows released Patch 1709, users have been having trouble getting their L2TP / IPSEC RAS VPN to work. After the update, users experienced the following errors:

The main reason why this update caused the L2TP / IPSEC VPN to stop working is that NAT traversal was disabled. Just follow our instructions to get your VPN working again.

Reinstallation of VPN package (CMAK)

After the upgrade (from 1703 to 1709), many users reported that their VPN client stopped working properly or stopped working altogether. After many complaints, Microsoft has officially confirmed the issue and released a statement saying that you may need to completely reinstall the VPN package. More specifically, it was about CMAK VPN networks (Connection Manager Administration Kit).
