June 2021 | Posted on June 3, 2021 by Abhishek Raj Leave a comment It happens – sometimes we hear a song while shopping at the mall or having a friendly conversation in a coffee shop. We can’t identify the name of the song, but the melody of the song won’t leave our heads. Next, we try to find the title of this song by randomly searching Google for fragments of this text – in vain! Don’t worry about it. In today’s post, I want to give you some useful tips to help you identify a song online.
Two ways to identify songs on the Internet
Depending on how you want to search, there are two ways to identify a song online:
- Download music files – if you have saved audio clips on your mobile phone or PC and want to know the name of the song.
- Listen to live music – if you want to identify the title of a song by listening to it live.
I will now discuss these two methods:
How do I identify the online song when downloading music files?
If you have music files on your device, there are three online tools to help you identify songs. These include:
1. Audio beacon
Audio Tag is a free online tool that allows you to download any music file, ideally up to 45 seconds long. The music recognition robot then compares the melodies in the downloaded music file with those already indexed in the database. This technology is called Acoustic Fingerprinting. If there is a match, the results are announced within 2 minutes. Audio Tag also provides the ability to recognize music directly from the link. For example, you can B. Paste a link to a YouTube music video directly into Audio Tag, and Audio Tag will start detecting the music in that video. Music detection by audio tags is not limited to YouTube. It also works with many other live streaming services such as MXPlayer, SoundCloud and many others.
2. What Zat Song
What Zat Song is a community-managed music identification platform. This is how it works: You upload a music file to the site, community members listen to it and try to come up with a name for your song. Since there are real people in the community, like you and me, you can expect a slight delay in finding your song title.
3. Aha music
Aha Music is a song search program (based on ACR Cloud) that works in web browsers. It works as an extension for Chrome and Edge browsers. This is how it works:
- After installing the extension, drag the music file into the web browser.
- Now start the audio playback and click on the Aha Music extension once the song starts playing in the browser.
- The extension identifies the song title in a few seconds.
How do you recognize a song online by listening/playing it live?
If you want to identify songs when you play them or listen to them live, check out five online tools in this section of the article that will help you name your favorite songs:
1. Siri / Google Assistant
Nowadays, smartphones come with a pre-installed voice assistant. For example, we have Siri on iPhone phones and Google Assistant on Android/Pixel phones. These voice assistants are really moving forward in time. Now you can even ask them to recognize songs playing nearby. Here’s how to do that on your iPhone or iPad:
- Activate Siri by pressing and holding the volume up/down button.
- Speak the important key words: Identify this song or What is this song?
- Siri will start listening to a song playing nearby, and the name of the song will be spoken within seconds.
On Android phones:
- Activate Google’s voice assistant by holding down the Home button.
- Say the nice word: What is this song or identify this song.
- The Google Assistant will start identifying a song playing nearby. It even works for your humming.
2. Shazam button on iPhone / iPad
There is even an easier and faster way to identify a song online on your iOS device. You can use Shazam to identify songs without installing the application on your device. With the iOS 14.2 update, Apple integrated Shazam directly into your device’s control center. Learn how to add Shazam to the Control Center for quick access:
- Go to settings
- Visit the control centre
- Scroll down the list and click the Add button to the left of Music Detection.
If you have an Android device, you can download the Shazam app from the Play Store.
3. SoundHound App
If you’re having trouble identifying songs with Shazam, try SoundHound. In my experience, SoundHound works best with snoring, instrumental melodies, and music of short duration. The SoundHound app is available on both Android and iOS platforms. This is how music recognition works in the SoundHound application:
- Sign up for SoundHound with your email address
- Open the application and click on the Search tab
- Now click on the orange SoundHound icon that appears in the middle of the screen.
- SoundHound starts by listening to and identifying the music playing around you.
- If you’re trying to identify a song by humming, press the SoundHound icon when you’re done humming.
4. Musixmatch Text Finder
Musixmatch is another good smartphone app that helps you identify songs online. It is primarily an application for finding song lyrics, but it also allows you to identify songs playing around you. Like Aha Music, Musixmatch’s song identification service is also supported by ACR Cloud. It can also be connected to Spotify and Apple Music, so you can listen to music on the go. The Musixmatch application allows you to identify the music being played around you. What is it? After identifying the title, the screen will also show the text of the title you just identified.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I identify an online song?
As the Internet has evolved, what once was a huge collection of websites with millions of songs has become a much smaller resource for finding music. The SoundCloud app has become the most popular way of listening to tracks, but you can also rely on the iTunes and Spotify services as well. However, all of these have their weaknesses. For example, iTunes is too costly to use on mobile devices, and Spotify is only free for people who already own a premium account. In 2021, music streaming services like Pandora, Apple Music, Spotify, Google Music, etc, are all over the place. All these music streaming services are great, but what if you are not a music streamer, but you just want to know a song based on some sample? Or, when you are listening to a song online, what if you are looking for a link to the song on another website? There are a lot of ways to do this, but the easiest way is by using Stereogum.
Where can I find new music in 2021?
Music is an integral part of our lives. Finding a new song out of the millions of songs available on the Internet can be a daunting task, so we took a look at some sites that are helping people find new music on the web. In 2021, almost every song you find online will be free, unless you’re the kind of person who likes to pay for music. On the popular streaming music platform Spotify, there are no ads and no DRM, which means that you can listen to music tracks and other media for free, forever. In addition, most music downloads on Spotify aren’t DRM-protected, so you can just copy and paste the song files you want onto your own hard drive or your computer’s music library.
Is there an app that can identify songs?
You can also search the internet to identify a song by its title or by lyrics. Then, there is also the song ID app which can identify a song based on the audio of the song in a few minutes. You can also have a look at the song ID app page in the Google Play store. In the past, people always used technology to listen to music, but with the introduction of the internet and the many websites that offer different songs, the task of identification was simplified. Nowadays, thanks to the internet, it is possible to identify the song you just heard in a click.
