The Japanese language uses characters that are different from English or another language. Recently, a feature called Japanese IME has been integrated into Windows. This is the input of software that is already present on your system. You can use the English keyboard to enter Japanese words in hiragana, katakana and kanji.

There are basically two methods for entering characters: Romaggi Entry and Kan Entry. At the moment, the Japanese prefer Romaji to Kana.

The mention Romanji is a gelatinised version of the Japanese language and literally means the Roman character that appears in other languages. The other is to use the keys on the keyboard that correspond to the Japanese kana.

This article shows you how to easily add a Japanese language pack. You don’t need a Japanese keyboard, you use the keyboard you already have.

How do I install a Japanese keyboard in Windows 10?

Here you can see what a Japanese keyboard looks like with both input methods:

You’ll notice that some of the keys have a Kana sign. Both methods use the EMI to enter Japanese characters. The difference is you type more keys with Romanji. On the other hand, it is difficult to remember the location of all the characters in Kana.

1. Install the language pack

  1. Click on the Start icon and select Settings.
  2. Go on time and tongue.
  3. Select the language in the left menu.
  4. In the Preferred Languages section, click on Add language.
  5. Type Japanese in the search box and when it is found, select it and click Next.
  6. Select additional features and click Install.
  7. Windows will download and install the language pack and keyboard mapping.
  8. After installation you will see it on the language bar icon in the taskbar.
  9. You can select a Japanese keyboard here.
  10. To change the keyboard configuration, click the A icon that appears.
  11. The symbol becomes the hiragana symbol あ .
  12. You can type in Japanese now.

2. Activating the language icon

Pay attention: To switch to Japanese, you should see the language icon on the right side of the taskbar. If you don’t have one, follow the steps below to activate it.

  1. Go to the Start icon and select Settings.
  2. Click on Adjust.
  3. Select the task bar from the left menu.
  4. Scroll down to the notification area and select Enable or Disable System Icons.
  5. Find the option to display the input and turn it on.
  6. You should now see this in the right corner of the taskbar.

You can switch to different EMI parameters using the small A symbol. The half alphanumeric width is selected by default. In standard mode, you can type in English as usual, but some punctuation marks have a different meaning.

Right-click on the A icon to select the desired keyboard mode: Hiragana or Katakana. But if you want to get into the kanji version, there isn’t one.

To use kanji, do not press the Enter key after writing a word, but press the space bar. A list is displayed and you can scroll through the available options using the arrow keys and the space bar.
