Master Teetotaling with These Tips

As a teetotaler (for the most part), I’ve often wondered what I’d do if I ever became a slave to my addiction. How would I get sober? Did I know the key to breaking free? In this article, I’ll share the results of an experiment I recently conducted.

I have lived teetotaling for over 20 years. I’m a teetotaling geek, and I’m here to share my tips and tricks that have helped me stay teetotaling…because drinking is just soooo boring.

I’ve been a teetotaling for 4 years now, and it has been both an easy and a hard journey. I remember when teetotaling was a big deal to me, and I was in no way prepared for the wonders that would be discovered during my quest. I was met with much success and much failure. But, I am happy to report that I am living a healthier and more fulfilling life as a result of my journey.

The holidays are a time to relax and let go. Alcohol can help some people in these situations because it reduces inhibitions. Therefore, it is customary to serve beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages at social gatherings. However, there are many reasons why people may avoid alcohol altogether. They may be the designated driver for their travel companions or have a medical condition that prevents them from drinking alcohol. You can also be sober or lead a sober lifestyle in recovery. You may feel uncomfortable sipping on a sparkling water while everyone else is tipsy, but don’t let that stop you from having fun. If you don’t drink alcohol and you know you don’t have to indulge, here are some tips to help you get into the holiday spirit while staying sober.

Inform the operator of your sobriety

word-image-3092 If a close friend is hosting the party, it might be a good idea to let him or her know in advance that you’re sober. You can explain why you don’t drink, as that may help them understand your situation better, or you can just say it’s your personal decision. Stay courteous and make it clear that other drinkers don’t mind. That way, the host knows not to offer you alcohol and can defend you if other guests try to persuade you to drink.

Bring your own drinks

Don’t count on there being soft drinks, bring your own so you have something to share. It also ensures that your drinks are truly alcohol-free, as some mixes contain a small amount of alcohol. You can even garnish your sparkling water with a wedge of lime or a fruit garnish to make it more festive and cocktail-like. Try unadulterated Shirley Temples and fruit juice and soda-based mocktails, and avoid ready-made drinks like non-alcoholic beer, which can contain up to 0.5% alcohol by volume. However, if the party is being held in a bar, make sure you bring extra cash as soft drinks may not be covered by the bar operator.

Staying involved

Talk to your friends or start a conversation with someone you just met. Keep discussions lighthearted and avoid controversial topics such as politics and religion. By participating in social interactions, you feel more involved in the celebration without consuming alcohol. Pour yourself a drink before joining in the toast and politely refuse to participate in the drinking games. A simple firm no should suffice, but if you are bothered by persistent invitations to drink, you can excuse yourself and go to another part of the room or another group of people.

Be open about sobriety

You can also talk to others about your sobriety and why you chose to stay sober. This often requires a degree of comfort and confidence, and a good presentation. Focus on telling your own story and try not to make others feel guilty about your decision to drink. Most people will support you, but if you are criticized, resist the urge to argue, as it can ruin everyone’s mood. You can change the subject or lighten the mood with a well-chosen joke.

If you feel like you’re letting your guard down, find a friend you can call for support and comfort. Let them know in advance what your party plans are so they know to pick up the phone when you call. When you’re recovering, it’s helpful to have a sponsor or sober companion to check in regularly and encourage your progress. Knowing when to leave

While it is strongly discouraged to take text messages, in this situation it may be considered acceptable to leave the party early without notifying the host or hostess. Leave as soon as you feel uncomfortable, and do so in silence so as not to upset the host and other guests. Don’t forget to send a note to your host afterwards to thank him for his hospitality. You can also let them know in advance that you may have to leave early, so they don’t have to worry about not seeing you. Choosing to be sober doesn’t have to put a damper on your social life or keep you from going to parties. It requires some changes and the support of your network, but it is possible.
